At 0019 hours on May 22nd, Engine 5-1 was dispatched for a vehicle rollover with injuries on Bridge Street near Spruce Street. Engine 5-1 responded and arrived to find an SUV on its driver’s side blocking the entire roadway. With the driver (only one in the vehicle) self-extricated, the rescue/engine crew set up scene lighting, stabilized the vehicle, checked for hazards, and controlled leaking fluids. Once the vehicle was towed, Engine 5-1 was back in service within an hour.

SADD Mock Accident at CVHS
Posted in Incidents on Friday, May 22, 2009 by franklinfireOn May 18th, fire-rescue and EMS personnel went to the Conemaugh Valley High School to participate in the biannual mock accident organized by SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). The program enables students to see the devasting results of driving under the influence by showing them a drunk driving crash involving fatalities, DUI arrests, injuries, and having to be cut out of cars.
Crews from East Taylor’s Engine 17-2 and Engine 5-1 (both rescue/engines) arrived to find two vehicles involved in a head-on collision and went to work stabilizing the vehicles and utilizing various rescue equipment to free five trapped patients in the two vehicles. The crew from Conemaugh’s Engine 15-4 performed hazard control, staffed a protective hoseline, and performed patient care until the patients were turned over to EMS crews from Conemaugh Valley Regional and Conemaugh. Also participating were police from East Taylor Township and East Conemaugh Borough.
Truck 5-1 Performs Public Service
Posted in Incidents on Friday, May 22, 2009 by franklinfireUpon returning from the airport drill, a crew utilized Truck 5-1’s aerial to assist the local VFW post with inspecting their flag pole. After determining what was needed to repair the flag pole’s rope, firefighters returned with Truck 5-1 on May 20th to complete the work.
Crews Participate in Airport Drill
Posted in Incidents on Friday, May 22, 2009 by franklinfireStarting at 0830 hours on May 9th, crews headed to Richland Township to participate in the biannual drill at the Johnstown-Cambria County Airport, which involved the scenario of a commuter jet crashing and burning with multiple patients trapped or thrown from the plane.
Mutual aid units initially stood by in a staging area before being assigned to tasks. Engine 5-1’s crew was assigned to relieve the crew from Richland Twp’s Engine 3-1 on fire suppression and was also responsible to maintain the foam blanket. Truck 5-1’s crew remained in staging except to assist some “walking wounded” patients found in the staging area to the EMS triage area. Upon completion of the drill, both apparatus returned to the station by 1230 hours.
