Today, Engine 5-1 headed to Shanksville, Somerset County to attend a special dedication ceremony for the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department’s new 9-11 Memorial. The monument is a 14ft high cross that was constructed from a piece of steel from the World Trade Center; it is mounted atop a pentagon-shaped concrete base and includes a plaque, which reads:
“Never Forget. We honor those who saw their untimely fate before them and chose to defeat evil to ensure America’s freedom.“
The steel was escorted by fire apparatus, police, and more than 1,000 motorcycles on its 311-mile journey from New York to Shanksville over the weekend.
